Abstract

This study aimed to examine the role of demand–withdraw communication patterns as a mediator in the relationship between attachment anxiety and relationship satisfaction among emerging adult college students who were dating. The study employed a quantitative correlational design using purposive sampling and involved 233 participants aged 18 to 25 years who were currently in a dating relationship. The research instruments included the Couples Satisfaction Index consisting of 16 items, the attachment anxiety subscale from the short form of Experiences in Close Relationships, and the Communication Patterns Questionnaire measuring two dimensions of demand–withdraw communication patterns. Data were analyzed using regression analysis and mediation testing with a bootstrapping technique. The results indicated that attachment anxiety had a negative effect on relationship satisfaction and a positive effect on demand–withdraw communication patterns. Mediation analysis showed that the self demand–partner withdraw dimension fully mediated the relationship between attachment anxiety and relationship satisfaction, whereas the partner demand–self withdraw dimension functioned as a partial mediator. Overall, demand–withdraw communication patterns play an important interactional mechanism in explaining the effect of attachment anxiety on relationship satisfaction among emerging adult college students.
